I'm John Keller.....

John Keller began his life in photography as an electron microscope technician/research assistant in the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department at the University of Illinois in Chicago Circle. His first published photos were electron micrographs of human and mammalian placenta on 3 ¼ x 4” glass plates and printed then in the department darkroom. John collected the samples from the delivery room or animal lab, fixed and embedded the tissue in araldite, stained and cut the sections and prepared them for electron microscopy and subsequent evaluation and photography. Although trained as a combat medic in the U.S. Army, his EM training and experience landed him a similar position at the 4thU.S. Army Medical Laboratory. After military service, John worked as an EM tech and medical lab technologist at Northwestern Medical School while he finished his undergraduate degree. His love of photography continued with formal training and a move from medical related photography to weddings, portraits, commercial and journalism.

Substituting for a photography teacher gave John his start in photography education, which continues to this day as a professor of photography at Doane University, for the OLLI program at the University of Nebraska and for group and private lessons. John maintains a long-running portrait, wedding and commercial studio and gallery, now located in the Mission Arts building in Lincoln, Nebraska. In addition to teaching, John writes a bi-monthly column titled, “Ask Doctor Photo” in the niche publication L Magazine.

John’s passion for photography, both behind the camera and in the classroom, continues with all the light and intensity it had many years ago, capturing images from landscapes, animals, birds and even from the depths of the oceans.

John’s studio and gallery in the Mission Arts building is open 1st Fridays and by appointment. Individual classes in photography and/or post-processing available by appointment.
